How cute! Are these gerbils? Are rats and gerbils the same? We had gerbils once and they loved to burrow in shavings. We could give them blocks of compacted shavings material and they would shred them all up and make elaborate homes. We had them in a large glass aquarium and they would shred the shavings and actually burrow out little rooms we could see into through the glass. They had babies once and kept the babies with them fussing over them. Then the babies got rambunctious (teenagers in gerbil years) and they burrowed out and built a new room for the babies -- it was like they added a rumpus room for the kids! The parent gerbils would be asleep and their room and the babies would be raising all kinds of shenanigans in their room. Too cute. They are very intelligent and each has their own definite personality. I don't remember them liking chewing gum though!
